There is no airport rental company whose counter is always fastest. Wait time changes by airport, time of day, staffing, vehicle availability, and whether your reservation qualifies for counter bypass. The fastest reliable strategy is usually to avoid the counter entirely at a participating location.
Counter bypass beats a counter-speed ranking
Programs from major rental companies can let eligible customers proceed to a vehicle area, dedicated booth, or preferred lane. Availability is location-specific, and a reservation may still require document verification. Check the exact pickup location and reservation instructions before landing.
National Emerald Club
National describes several service types. At participating Emerald Aisle locations, eligible members may bypass the counter and select a vehicle from the designated aisle. At some other locations, Counter Service uses a dedicated Emerald Club line, while a booth on the lot may handle the agreement. “Emerald Club” does not automatically mean the same process at every airport.
Check National’s official Counter Service information.
Avis Preferred and QuickPass
Avis says Preferred members can skip the counter at most airport locations using QuickPass, with available car options shown through the Avis app or website. The word “most” matters: confirm that the selected airport and reservation support the feature.
Hertz Gold Plus Rewards
At locations supporting the process, Hertz may display a member’s name and parking-space assignment so the traveler can proceed toward the vehicle. Procedures differ by facility, and walk-in renters may still need the lobby or counter. Read the pickup instructions attached to the actual reservation.
Steps that reduce pickup delays
- Join the applicable loyalty program before booking when membership is required.
- Complete your profile, including license and payment details, before the trip.
- Reserve directly under the same member profile.
- Check whether the airport location specifically offers counter bypass.
- Install the company app and review pickup instructions after the vehicle is assigned.
- Bring the physical license and acceptable payment method in case verification is required.
When you may still need the counter
A first rental, profile mismatch, prepaid third-party reservation, additional driver, age restriction, international license question, specialty vehicle, payment issue, or local rule can trigger manual processing. If a particular vehicle class is essential, do not assume an aisle-selection program will have it.
Bottom line
Do not choose a company based on an unsupported universal speed ranking. Compare the exact airport’s facility and choose a reservation that explicitly supports counter bypass. Completing identity and payment details before arrival usually matters more than the logo above the desk.
