Understanding Final Boarding and TSA Gate Timing

When the gate agent announces “final boarding,” you typically have 5-10 minutes before the aircraft door closes—but don’t count on it.

What Final Boarding Really Means

Airport terminal scene

Airlines must close the aircraft door 10-15 minutes before departure for on-time performance. “Final boarding” is their last call before that window closes.

Once the door shuts, it rarely reopens—even if you’re standing right there. The crew has begun departure procedures, and reopening requires paperwork and potential delays that affect the entire system.

Don’t Be That Person

Runners sprinting to gates rarely make it. If you hear your name called by name, you’re already in trouble. The gate agent has likely started the rebooking process.

Safe Buffer Times

Airport travel
  • Domestic flights: Be at the gate 30 minutes before departure
  • International flights: 45-60 minutes minimum
  • If checking bags: Add extra time; bag cutoffs are strict

The airport bar isn’t going anywhere. Your flight is.
