Billings Logan International Airport: Where Montana Meets the Sky

If you’re an aviation photography nerd – and I say that with affection because I’m one too – Billings Logan is genuinely underrated. The setting is unlike almost any other airport in the country.

That Location Though

The airport sits on what locals call the Rimrocks – basically a sandstone plateau with cliffs that look like something out of a western movie. You get planes landing and taking off with these rugged cliffs as a backdrop. Golden hour shots here are genuinely spectacular. The light quality in Montana is something else.

The Building Itself

They designed the terminal to fit with the surroundings, which I appreciate. Clean lines, modern but not coldly so. Big windows let in tons of natural light and give you views of the action on the runways. Way better than those windowless terminals that feel like bunkers.

Here’s what I love: this place looks completely different depending on when you visit. Winter shots with snow-covered runways and mountains in the background. Summer with bright blue skies and green everywhere. Fall with that golden grass Montana’s famous for. Each season offers something unique.

You get a nice mix of aircraft here. Commercial flights from the major carriers, but also private planes, charter flights, corporate jets. Sometimes interesting military aircraft passing through. The combination of diverse planes and that incredible setting keeps things fresh.

Not kidding – you’ll sometimes see hawks or other birds of prey circling near the airport. Adds a wild element to your shots. Just Montana being Montana, I guess. The surrounding landscape is pretty untouched, so nature shows up in unexpected ways.

Best Times to Shoot

Sunrise and sunset are obviously prime time. That Big Sky country light hitting the Rimrocks while a plane takes off? Chef’s kiss. Foggy mornings create these ethereal scenes with aircraft emerging from the mist. Even midday has good light here because the air is so clear at this altitude.
