Chicago Rockford International (RFD) sits about 85 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. It’s small, it’s easy, and for certain trips, it beats the major Chicago airports in ways that actually matter.
Wait, There’s Another Chicago Airport?

I know, the name is a bit of a stretch. “Chicago” Rockford is definitely marketing. But if you live in the northern suburbs, Rockford, or anywhere in that part of Illinois, RFD can actually be closer and way less stressful than fighting traffic to O’Hare or Midway.
The airport has been around since 1946, but it really became a viable option in the 2000s when they started expanding and rebranding. They added “Chicago” to the name in 2003, which tells you they were getting serious about competing for passengers.

They’ve got expansion plans – more passenger capacity, technology upgrades, potentially more routes. The trajectory has been growth for a while now, and they seem committed to keeping that going.
Will RFD ever compete with O’Hare for business travelers? No, that’s not the point. But for leisure travel to popular destinations, and for people who value convenience over selection, it’s a legitimate option that more people should consider.
Should You Use It?
If you live anywhere near Rockford or the far northern Chicago suburbs, definitely check it out. If your destination is somewhere Allegiant flies direct, and you value easy parking and short security lines over having 50 flight options, RFD might be your airport.
Not for everyone. But for the right trips, it’s genuinely better than the alternatives.
