TSA Testing New Liquid Rules at Select Airports

TSA announced new liquid rules taking effect at select airports this month, allowing passengers to carry containers up to 12 ounces through security checkpoints.

The pilot program currently operates at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. Officials plan to expand testing to additional hubs based on early results.

What Changed

Standard 3.4-ounce limits remain in place at most checkpoints. Only lanes equipped with CT scanning technology qualify for the expanded allowance. Look for designated signage when approaching security.

Travelers should still pack liquids in clear bags for faster screening. TSA officers may request additional inspection of larger containers.

Which Airports Participate

Atlanta and LAX launched the program in January. Denver International and Dallas-Fort Worth expect to join by spring. Check your departure airport website for current status before packing.

International flights maintain existing restrictions regardless of departure terminal technology.

Tips for Travelers

Arrive early during the rollout period. New procedures may cause temporary delays as officers adjust to updated protocols. TSA PreCheck members report smoother transitions at participating checkpoints.

Keep prescription medications and baby formula accessible. These items already qualify for exemptions under current guidelines and remain subject to additional screening.
